Interview Questions and Answers for Walmart Cashier

What can you tell us about Walmart?

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world. Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, the company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962. It is ranked #1 on the Fortune 500 list in 2014 and their motto is, “Save Money, Live Better”.

Why would you want to work in the capacity of cashier for Walmart?
I am very impressed with the way Walmart creates so many jobs, reduces inflation, and provides great products for families in all income ranges. With Walmart being a Fortune 500 company, I feel that it will provide me with an opportunity to learn a lot about the retail industry. Therefore, I would like to be part of it in the role of a cashier.

How do you manager cash register?
I am a perfectionist so I make sure that the register is balanced properly. Moreover, I make sure that in case of any discrepancy, I resolve it before handing over my station to the next shift staff.

How would you deal with an upset customer?
I am a cool-minded individual and never react negatively. If a customer is angry, I would listen to his/her complaint and do my best to resolve their problem.

If you have a meeting with the store manager and your shift is just ending but you suddenly face a complaining customer, how will you deal with the situation?
I would give the customer my full attention and would find out why they are angry. If the customer was upset with an item already purchased, I would ask the customer if they had their receipt and if so I would direct them to customer service to refund their money or replace the item.  If the customer was upset that they could not find what they are looking for, I would direct the customer to the place that they need to go. After that, I will go to the meeting and explain the reason why I was late (if I have to) because no matter what, customer satisfaction must always be a retail cashier’s priority.

Sometimes teamwork can be challenging. Tell us about a situation where you were part of the team but one or more members weren’t doing their part. How did you manage the situation?

When I was working at an overnight stocking shift, among the total six of us, three were working very slowly and it seemed as the goal could not be achieved if they kept on working at this speed.
In order to make up for their slow work, I upgraded my speed and it solved the problem automatically, because when they saw me putting in extra effort, they realized that they were working very slowly and sped themselves up to a great extent.

Tell us about an instance where you were over loaded and had to work very fast to meet the dead line. How did the situation affect your quality of work?
There was a time during my employment when I had to face such situation. I handled this situation by working quickly but I knew that I may now be more vulnerable to making errors. Therefore, I made conscious effort to concentrate more and at the end of the shift, I managed almost double the work without any error.

Why should Walmart hire you as a cashier?
I have worked in a retail environment for a long time and am well knowledgeable about various types of cash registers and database. I have a successful track record of providing excellent customer service and maintaining excellent productivity levels by scanning merchandise quickly and accurately. Furthermore, I have great references when it comes to working with coworkers.
